In 1949, Father Attout of Maredsous Abbey worked out the first Maredsous recipe with a local brewer. The abbey owns the brand and recipes. Since 1964 the beers have been brewed by Duvel Moortgat at Breendonk, not at the abbey. They carry the "Certified Belgian Abbey Beer" label.
