3 Fonteinen opened in 1887 as a café and geuze blendery. Gaston Debelder bought it in 1953 and passed it to his sons in 1982. In 2009 a faulty thermostat made thousands of bottles explode, and the brewery survived by distilling the spoiled geuze into a spirit called 'Armand's Spirit'.
