- What is Trappist beer?Trappist beer is beer brewed inside a Trappist (Cistercian of the Strict Observance) monastery, under the monks' control, with profits going to the community or charity. Since 1997 the International Trappist Association certifies it with the Authentic Trappist Product label.
- What is the difference between ale and lager?Ale is fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae at about 15 to 24 °C, which produces fruity flavors. Lager is fermented with Saccharomyces pastorianus at about 7 to 13 °C and then cold-conditioned, which gives a cleaner, crisper taste.
- How is beer made?Beer is made by malting grain, mashing it in hot water to turn starch into sugar, separating the sweet liquid (wort), boiling it with hops, fermenting it with yeast into alcohol and carbon dioxide, then conditioning, filtering and packaging it.
- What is the Reinheitsgebot? The Reinheitsgebot is the Bavarian beer purity decree of 23 April 1516, which limited beer ingredients to barley, hops and water. Its principles survive in Germany's 1993 Provisional Beer Law, which allows water, malt, hops and yeast, with extra grains and sugar for some top-fermented beers.
