Beer has been brewed on the De Halve Maan site for about 500 years, and the current brewery dates from 1856. The family relaunched it in 2005 with Brugse Zot ("Bruges Fool"), named after a legend in which Emperor Maximilian called Bruges a madhouse. In 2016 it opened a 3.2-km beer pipeline under the old town.
