Affligem
Opwijk, Belgium
1956 · first brewed
Benedictine monks at Affligem Abbey brewed beer from at least 1074, until the occupying Germans seized the copper equipment in 1917. Brewing at the abbey stopped for good in 1940. In 1956 the abbey licensed its name to a commercial brewer. Since 1970 it has been brewed in Opwijk, and Heineken now runs the brand while the abbey owns the name.
