Egied Maes founded the brewery in Waarloos in 1880, and the first Maes Pils was brewed in 1946. Maes merged with Cristal-Alken in 1988 to form Alken-Maes, now owned by Heineken. Since 2003 the beer has been brewed in Alken, but the company is still based in Waarloos. It is Belgium's second-biggest pils.
