The canons of Notre-Dame de Leffe abbey, founded in 1152, brewed beer from 1240 until the brewery closed in 1809. Brewing restarted in 1952 when the abbot teamed up with brewer Albert Lootvoet. Leffe now belongs to AB InBev, and the abbey still receives royalties.
