Fat Tire's recipe grew out of co-founder Jeff Lebesch's bicycle trip through Belgium's breweries; he and Kim Jordan founded New Belgium in 1991. The brewery promotes it with vintage bicycles outside its Fort Collins brewery. Bought by Kirin's Lion in 2019, it changed Fat Tire from an amber ale to a lighter ale in 2023.
