One of the last makers of steam beer, a style name the company trademarked. Fritz Maytag, heir to the Maytag appliance fortune, saved it from closure in 1965 and inspired early US craft brewers. Sapporo shut it down in 2023; in 2024 Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya bought it, planning to restart it in San Francisco.
