1871 · brewery founded

Jan-Leonard Moortgat founded the brewery in 1871. Its flagship was first called Victory Ale to mark the end of World War I. In the 1920s a drinker called it "nen echten duvel" (a real devil), and the name stuck. The family-controlled group also owns La Chouffe, De Koninck and Firestone Walker.
