Russian River was started by Korbel Champagne Cellars, which hired Vinnie Cilurzo as brewmaster and sold him and his wife Natalie the brewery in 2002. Cilurzo is credited with inventing the double IPA style. Pliny the Elder is its double IPA; the stronger Pliny the Younger draws long queues at its yearly release.
