1710 · brewery founded
John Smithwick founded the brewery on the site of a Franciscan abbey where monks had brewed ale since the 14th century. The family ran it until Guinness bought it in 1965. When it closed in 2013 it was Ireland's oldest working brewery; brewing moved to Dublin and the site became a visitor centre.
