William Beamish and William Crawford founded the brewery on the site of an existing porter brewery. By 1805 it was Ireland's largest brewery, until Guinness overtook it in 1833. Heineken closed the original brewery in 2009, but Beamish stout is still brewed in Cork at Heineken's nearby plant.
