In 1759, Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease on an unused brewery at £45 a year. He began brewing porter in 1778. The harp trademark, registered in 1876, is based on the Trinity College harp. Guinness is owned by Diageo, and the Guinness Storehouse has had more than 20 million visitors.
