James J. Murphy founded the Lady's Well Brewery; by 1906 it was Ireland's second-largest brewer after Guinness. Heineken bought it in 1983 and took Murphy's international. A 1990s ad campaign played on its smoother taste with the line 'Like the Murphy's, I'm not bitter'.
