Founded by brothers Amund and Ellef Ringnes with Axel Heiberg. The brewery sponsored the polar expeditions of Nansen and Sverdrup, and Sverdrup named the Arctic islands Amund Ringnes, Ellef Ringnes and Axel Heiberg after them. Norway's largest brewer, it has been fully owned by Carlsberg since 2004.
