Sea captain Mads Langaard founded the brewery in 1859 and named it after the Frydenlund area of Christiania (now Oslo). Production moved to Ringnes in 1995. Frydenlund beers are now brewed at Ringnes's Gjelleråsen brewery in Nittedal, and the old buildings house OsloMet university.
