Founded in Tromsø by Ludwig Markus Mack, it long promoted itself as the world's northernmost brewery. In 2012, after over 130 years in Tromsø, production moved to Nordkjosbotn in Balsfjord, and the 'northernmost' title passed to breweries in Greenland and later Svalbard.
