Karjala was first brewed in Sortavala in 1932. Its label shows the Karelian coat of arms, with a straight western sword clashing with a Russian sabre. When the Soviet ambassador complained about the label in 1968, sales rose. Hartwall, owned by Royal Unibrew, brews it in Lahti.
