Richard Emerson discovered European beer styles during a year in Edinburgh and started brewing because he was unhappy with New Zealand beer. Critic Michael Jackson listed its 1812 India Pale Ale among the 500 best beers in the world. Lion, owned by Kirin, bought the brewery in 2012.
