DB Breweries created the Monteith's brand in 1990, reviving the name of Stuart Monteith, whose Phoenix brewery in Reefton joined Westland Breweries in 1927. A 2001 plan to close the brewery was reversed after four days of public outcry, but in 2020 DB moved commercial production to Auckland and Timaru.
