La Zaragozana was founded as a 'beer, malt and ice factory' by a group that included the mayor of Zaragoza, to put Aragon's plentiful barley to use. Still independent, it launched Spain's first alcohol-free beer, Ámbar Sin, in 1976, and Ámbar Especial was the first Spanish beer sold in the US (1989).
