Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria founded it in 1589 as the brewery of the royal court, and it is still owned by the Bavarian state. In 1632, the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus agreed to spare Munich for a ransom that included 1,000 buckets of beer, a third of them Hofbräu Maibock. It also runs the Hofbräuhaus beer hall.
