Ettal Abbey has brewed since 1609. In 2011 its wheat beers were moved into a new company, Benediktiner Weißbräu, together with the Bitburger group. Because Ettal lacked the capacity, most Benediktiner beer is brewed at Licher in Lich, Hesse, using Ettal's recipe and yeast.
