Nuns at Göss Abbey brewed beer in the Middle Ages, and a brewer is recorded there in 1459. In 1860, Max Kober, a brewer who had worked at Żywiec, bought part of the former abbey and restarted brewing. Gösser Spezial was served at the signing of the 1955 Austrian State Treaty. It belongs to Heineken's Brau Union.
