CCU launched Escudo in 1942 as a stronger, fuller-bodied alternative to its Pilsener; it was the first labelled beer product in Chile. 'Escudo' means 'shield', a name that fit its role in the 1990s defending CCU's market against a new competitor. Its slogan was 'Escudo es más cerveza'.
