Cervecería India was founded on 2 November 1937 by the Valdés Cobián brothers. Medalla Light, launched around the time Puerto Rico hosted the 1979 Pan American Games, was the island's first light beer and is now its best-selling beer. The company was renamed Compañía Cervecera de Puerto Rico in 2009.
