Brewed in Plzeň since 1869, when the town's First Joint-Stock Brewery was founded; the Gambrinus name was registered in 1919. The legendary beer king Gambrinus is thought to be a corruption of 'Jan Primus', Duke John I of Brabant. Now part of Plzeňský Prazdroj, owned by Asahi, it is one of the best-selling Czech beers.
