1847 · brewery founded
J. C. Jacobsen founded the brewery in 1847 and named it after his son Carl. In 1883, its laboratory isolated the yeast used for pale lager and shared it freely. The same lab also developed the pH scale. The Carlsberg Foundation has been the majority owner since Jacobsen's death in 1887.
