William Worthington, a cooper, bought a Burton brewery for £320 in 1761. Its White Shield IPA has been brewed since 1829, and from 1872 it was the first brewery to use a laboratory systematically. It merged with Bass in 1927, and Coors (now Molson Coors) bought the brand in 2002.
