First brewed in 1958, after malt rationing eased, it is named after the finger-shaped Kentish signposts that pointed pilgrims to Thomas Becket's shrine in Canterbury. It has EU protected status as a Kentish ale. Shepherd Neame dates itself to 1698 and claims to be Britain's oldest brewer.
