Robert Theakston founded the brewery in 1827. Old Peculier is named after the Peculier of Masham, a parish outside a diocese's jurisdiction. The brewery was taken over by Matthew Brown and then Scottish & Newcastle, and the Theakston family bought a majority stake back in 2003. It still employs a full-time cooper.
