Desnoes & Geddes began in 1918, when two shopkeepers merged their businesses. Red Stripe was introduced in 1928. Some accounts trace its recipe to a brewery in Galena, Illinois. Shipments to the US were briefly halted in 1989 after cannabis was found in shipping containers. Heineken now controls the company.
