Brewing at Cēsis is first recorded in a 1590 audit of Cēsis Castle, and the brewery claims to be the oldest in the Baltic and Nordic countries. Its historic buildings date from 1878. It was privatised in 1995, bought by Finland's Olvi in 1999, and became Latvia's largest beer producer in 2014.
